One of our recent alumni has won a prestigious research grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.  Dr. Luis G. Brieba was a graduate student in the Biochemistry Dept. of the Health Sciences center from 1996-2001.  While here he won the Guarino Award for excellence in Graduate Research.  Afterwards he went to Harvard Medical School where he did post-doctoral work with Dr. Tom Ellenberger. Last year Dr. Brieba established his own lab at the CINVESTAV research center in Mexico City, Mexico.  Just two days ago he was pleased to hear that he had been awarded a prestigous Howard Hughes Medical Institute International Research Scholar Grant for half a million dollars (5 years at 100,000/yr).  Only 20 or 30 of these are awarded every year to promising young biomedical researchers around the globe.
